Frequently Asked Questions

What is Grid Connected Solar Power?
Solar (photovoltaic) panels mounted on your roof collect sunlight and convert it via an inverter into standard household electricity. When the system generates more electricity than you need, it is fed back into the power grid, generating credit against your bill. When your home requires extra electricity the power grid automatically supplies it.

Why get grid connected solar?
  • Reduce the environmental impact of your home:

Australia is blessed with an abundance of sunshine – why not use your roof space to generate free, green power? Your panels will produce electricity from the sun with zero emissions to pollute our atmosphere or contribute to global warming. You can do your bit to help our planet.

  • To save money on your electricity bills:

Grid connect solar allows you to power your home from energy generated from the sun. When you generate excess electricity you effectively sell it back to your power provider – they will buy your power and credit your bill.  When your system is not producing power (e.g. at night) the power grid supplies the power that you need. In many cases by switching to off peak tariffs with your power provider (e.g. SmartPower) you can maximize your savings. Electricity providers have already increased their tariffs, with further price rises on the way. Producing your own electricity will help protect you from future price increases.

Can you get different size systems?
Yes. Most residential users would install a system between 1kW and 3kW.  If your budget and roof space allows for it, you can connect up to 5kW to the grid.  Business owners, schools or community groups may choose an even larger system.  The system you choose will depend on your energy requirements and budget. Do you want to supplement your electricity supply with solar power, or basically power your entire home? To determine which size system you need, Solarkings will look at your daily units of electricity consumption (you can find this on your electricity bill) averaged over the year. Based on the average household consumption, a 2- 3kW system would power a complete energy efficient home. Solarkings can also look at your energy use and suggest ways to make your home more energy efficient.

What type of equipment do Solarkings install?
Solarkings recommend and install Suntech and Trina panels and SMA and Xantrex inverters.
Suntech are the world’s highest selling solar panels. They offer proven high quality and high efficiency at an affordable price. Their products reflect years of research and stringent quality control.  Suntech panels come with an industry leading 25 year power output guarantee.
Trina Solar is an internationally recognized manufacturer of photovoltaic (PV) modules. As a global top 10 module manufacturer, Trina Solar has a long history as a solar PV pioneer, since it was founded in 1997. Their high-quality PV modules provide clean and reliable solar power to clients in residential, commercial, industrial and utility scale applications around the world.  They offer a 25 year power output warranty.
SMA inverters are long standing industry leaders.  Manufactured in Germany SMA offer high efficiency and proven performance.  They are widely considered to be one of the world’s best solar inverters. SMA inverters come with a 5 year warranty when installed with Suntech / Trina panels.  Optional extended 10 year warranties are available at a small additional cost.
Xantrex are Canadian designed, high performance solar inverters with efficiency boosting transformer-less technology. Like SMA inverters they are weather proof and can be installed indoors or outdoors while still offering the same high efficiency. Xantrex offer a 5 year warranty on all of their inverters; an optional 10 year warranty upgrade is available.

Do solar panels need regular maintenance?
Occasionally they may need to be wiped over to ensure optimum performance. Otherwise they should be maintenance free.  Under most conditions, panels are self cleaning with normal Perth rainfall.

Who installs the system?
Solarkings are serious about offering their customers personal service. The team member who visits you to provide your quote will be there throughout the installation. All installations are carried out by our licensed electrical contractor and Clean Energy Council accredited photovoltaic system designer / installer.

Are there rebates available?
The Solar Homes and Communities Plan rebate ended in June 2009 and has been replaced by the Solar Credits scheme.
The Solar Credits scheme multiplies the Renewable Energy Certificates (RECS) generated by all eligible renewable energy systems by 3 for the first 1.5kW. RECS are a variable payment which can be bought and sold once generated – their value they may go up or down depending upon market fluctuations.
Systems larger than 1.5kW will still receive RECS for the remainder of the system; however they will only receive the standard number of RECS for the portion of the system over 1.5kW. For example, a householder installing a 2kW system would receive Solar Credits i.e. 3 x RECS for the first 1.5kw and 1 x RECS for the remaining 0.5kW.
You can choose to pay the full price and claim your own Solar Credits, or Solarkings will give you a point of sale discount on your system if you would rather transfer them to us. Either way, we will help you claim all Government rebates, and take care of the paperwork for you as part of our installation service.
